LATEST IMAGES - SHETLAND1

We have always both wanted to visit the Shetlands. This year we spent nearly 3 weeks on the Islands searching out the bird life. After a long drive to Aberdeen and an overnight ferry ride, we finally arrived at Lerwick, the capital of the Shetlands. As we drove up the spine of Mainland we saw 7 Ravens down on a road kill and a Merlin flash across us, a good start. A couple of short Ferry rides got us on to Unst the northern most inhabited Island of the UK where we stayed for the first week. Our first surprise was that the bird life was not as prolific as we thought it would be, particularly on the moors. However a visit to Hermaness to see the sea bird colonies soon got the cameras clicking. Our first visit coincided with strong winds that helped us take flight shots of the numerous Gannets and Fulmars as they turned down wind.
