We also used Unst as a base to visit the island of Fetlar, a short ferry ride away. Fetlar is famed for holding the vast majority of the UK's breeding population of Red Necked Phalaropes. We timed our visit to coincide with their return and were delighted both with the birds and their tameness. Phalaropes are unusual with the female being the most brightly coloured and the male doing all brooding and feeding of the young.
