Large numbers of Pink-footed Geese were around the Holkham area of Norfolk and they seemed to congregate around recently harvested sugar beet fields. The best spot we found for photography was on the coast road near Holkham as the geese were very close in a field next to the road. They were relatively settled although they would fly away from the edge of the field when anything other than a car went past. We positioned ourselves by a gate just across the road and waited for the geese to take off either as a lorry went past, or more spectacularly, as they departed to their roost on the Wash mudflats. The noise and spectacle as they all flew to roost rivaled the Snow Geese at Bosque del Apache
