We wanted to give our new lens, the Canon 70-300mm IS DO, a good try out in a variety of situations so we traveled down to Pembrokeshire and spent a day on Skomer Island. Unfortunately, you can only get onto the Island from 10.00 and have to leave by the last boat which was at 17.00 last Sunday when the light is not at its best. However, we had bright overcast conditions for much of the day which was good. The lens performed very well with the IS being particularly impressive and whilst the autofocus speed was not up to the 500mm IS speed, it was still more than adequate. As the 70-300mm is so small and light it has very little poser value which may be a good thing as photographers seem to be getting some bad press at the moment, indeed the Assistant Warden made a specific point to include photographers in his warning to stay on the paths which we felt was most uncalled for.
