After a week on Ardnamurchan we moved to Aviemore in the hope of getting up on the Cairngorms primarily to see and hopefully photograph Dotterel. Luckily one of our two days coincided with light winds and we managed to achieve both of our objectives. The following day after a brief visit to the Osprey hide at Loch Garten we were extremely fortunate to come across a displaying male Capercaillie at midday photographable from the road. This was by pure chance and if the light hadn't been quite so harsh (why does the sun shine went you don't want it to and doesn't shine when you do) it would have been almost a perfect encounter without the long hours I had recently spent in a hide in Finland trying for the same shots.
