LATEST IMAGES - SOMERSET4 We were not quite as lucky with Bitterns as we'd hoped on the Somerset Levels as two of the three fly passes we had were into the light. One was particularly annoying as we had stopped in the same place on the track at Shapwick Heath for over an hour as I thought I had seen a brief glimpse of a Bittern flying into the reeds. After the hour I thought I had been mistaken and we were getting cold but as often happens we should have stayed another five minutes because a Bittern flew across the track but by now it was into the light! Still it was good to see 3 Bitterns and to hear so many booming, maybe next time for the prize winning image! We only saw Cattle Egrets flying across the reserve in the early morning obviously going from their roost site but we did came across a couple on the Levels following cows about as they are supposed to. We also regularly came across a Roe Deer in the same area of Shapwick Heath, especially early in the morning.
