January saw us in Colombia, a country with a dark recent history but seemingly determined to put that in the past. We went with Glenn Bartley, (www.glennbartley.com) a Canadian wildlife photographer specialising in South American countries. The trip visited a number of different areas each with its own specific birds although the main emphasis was on Hummingbirds and Tanagers, with over 40 species of each seen with most photographed. Probably the most bizarre bird we saw was the Andean Cock-of-the-rock at its lek with its bright red plumage, small yellow eye and its beak which was difficult to see being covered by its feathers. We were told most leks of this bird are deep in the forest and consequently very dark and difficult for photography. This one, in Jardin, was a local tourist attraction and the birds displayed at eye level, in good light and right next to the coffee shop!
