On our way to Midway Atoll we had a day on Oahu Island in Hawaii and on our way back a few days on Kauai Island. We had seen Hawaiian Monk Seals on Midway Atoll but were not allowed to get anywhere near them. On Kauai you were allowed to get close enough to take pictures but still rightly stopped from getting too close. The Monk seal is the only seal in Hawaii and is endangered. It was great to see the Nene or Hawaiian Goose in its natural habitat of Hawaii as we had only seen this bird before at Slimbridge WWT chasing you round for free food. Sir Peter Scott, the founder of the WWT in the UK, was instrumental in starting the captive breeding program for the Nene that probably saved it from going into extinction, Wintering Pacific Golden Plover were common birds on both islands and looked splendid as many of them were in full breeding plumage.
