LATEST IMAGES - MIDWAY ATOLL8

Midway Atoll has a number of quite rare species and we were fortunate to see and photograph three of these. The Bristle-thighed Curlew breeds in western Alaska and winters on Pacific Islands. It numbers only around 2000 in total  but for such a rare bird was surprisingly tolerant of us. You can clearly see how it got its name in the first image. Laysan Ducks have been translocated to Midway Atoll in case the population on Laysan Island, the only other place they are found, has a major problem.  There used to be large numbers of  Short-tailed Albatrosses breeding around Japan until they were extensively hunted for food and feathers. Up until a few years ago they only bred on one off shore Japanese island but now a few of the Short-tailed Albatrosses visit Midway Atoll and have started breeding.
