One of the main reasons for going on my recent trip to India was to visit Khichan in the Thar Desert where the local villagers every morning from October to March feed the Demoiselle Cranes that have migrated across the Himalayas. The cranes start to congregate in the desert at the edge of the village at first light and number between 3 and 5 thousand. Eventually they start flying into a fenced compound in the village where sacks of grain have been spread about. It is a fantastic sight and has recently featured in an episode of the Earthflight series. We had a ringside seat  photographing from a flat roof overlooking the compound, all very civilized as we were brought out tea and biscuits! It was indeed a great spectacle and well worth all the travelling.
